For Datsunday, here's Wangan Midnight ...with French subs. It's by the folks behind Initial D and stars an S30 (Datsun 240Z) with an L28ET swap from a 280ZX that's tuned to make 600 HP. It may also qualify as Sparfbait because Z31.

Wangan Midnight is actually the show that opened my eyes to the Z31! I forget the name of the side character, but somewhere mid-way through the show he tunes his 300ZX Turbo to the very limit, and it's briefly seen blasting past (IIRC) Blackbird. WANT!

Akio's Z31 is pretty cool as well, even though it's a 2+2 and not a 2-seater (as well as a very early model, probably '84, judging from the hood scoop which indicates it being an early air-cooled 300ZX Turbo).

Yeah, the side character doesn't actually wind up being the main third wheel racer in his arc (that's an R32), but he does catch Blackbird by surprise.

Yeah I know, I've seen the whole series, and I'm still bummed that the (admittedly rather naive) Z31 kid got dropped in favor of ANOTHER broken GT-R-driving character.

EDIT: In fact that whole arc was confusing as hell, because the GT-R guy looks near-identical to Akio.

GT-Rs and Evos are par for the course in this anime (especially since there's a whole club of GT-Rs in one arc). It really was strange how the guy looked like Akio, as the characters don't look dramatically different to begin with.

Of course, because the mangaka absolutely loves them apparently. I'm glad he never made them Mary Sues, though, although admittedly he did just that with the S30.

If I remember right, then that Z31 driver blew up his engine or something from all the boost. Bummer, it would have been fun to see a different car in WM.

Yep, they basically wrote him off like that. They didn't even show the incident, it's just retold briefly in a conversation.

I loved that show...but it didn't follow the manga accordingly (most anime doesn't anyway...) And I felt that the pace was WAY too fast when they told the story of the guy with the white GTR and the custom exhaust. I wanted to see the actual crash with the douche that hated ''theses luxury'' cars. And I still wanna see the F1 Turbo story arc! They must redo it!
